Star India player Shubman Gill had a disappointing outing in the first Test match against England at Hyderabad. The Indian team suffered a shocking 28-run loss as they could not chase 231 runs in the fourth innings. Rohit Sharma was the top scorer with 39. KS Bharat and R Ashwin produced valiant efforts but could not take the game into the fifth day.
Gill has a brilliant One-day international cricket. He has scored so far 2271 runs from 44 matches (44 innings) with 6 centuries and 13 half-centuries with the best score of 208 against New Zealand last year.
Gill had a disappointing outing in the test series against West Indies and South Africa away from home. Since dropping to number 3, he has struggled to score runs. Former Indian player, Mohammed Kaif said that Gill is a talented batter but suited to white-ball cricket on flat pitches.
Kaif also said that Gill needs to work on his footwork and improve his skills in the red-ball format. His performances in Test matches have not been great with 1063 runs from 21 matches (39 innings) including the best score of 128 against Australia at Ahmedabad. During his test career so far, Gill smashed 2 centuries and 6 half-centuries to his name.
“Shubman Gill is a very talented batsman, no doubt about that, but his game is of white-ball cricket and flat wickets which we get in limited-overs internationals. But in Test cricket, you won’t get flat wickets, the ball will bounce, the ball will turn, so Gill has to work on his footwork, and I am sure that he will make the necessary adjustments and will score runs again,” the former Indian cricketer said.
India need to do well against England
The Indian team needs to level the series after a narrow 28-run loss in the first Test match. After dismissing England for 246 runs in the first innings, Yashavi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja scored 80’ but were not able to convert them into big scores. India took a 190-run lead in the first innings.
After picking 5 wickets early, Ollie Pope played a blinder of an innings with 196 runs. Indian spinners struggled as Pope played sweeps and reverse sweeps that changed the plan of bowlers. The second test match will be played on 2nd February at Vizag. They are currently at number 5th spot in the ICC 2023-25 World Test championship cycle.
