The Indian men’s badminton scripted history on Sunday as they won the Thomas Cup at the Impact Arena in Bangkok. Wishes started to pour in for the Indian team as they defeated the 14-time champions Indonesia 3-0 to lift the title.
Lakshya Sen opened the campaign for the Indian team against Anthony Sinsuka Ginting. The 20-year-old had suffered defeats in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. In the final, he lost the first game 8-21 but made a remarkable comeback to win the next two 21-17 and 21-16. With his win, India earned a 1-0 lead against Indonesia.
Next up was India’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. Just like Lakshya’s match, the doubles pair too lost the first game against Ahsan and Sukamuljo. They made a strong comeback to defeat the Indonesian pair by 18-21, 23-21, and 21-19.
Kidambi Srikanth sealed the championship for India in the third match. He played against Jonathan Christie, who had already defeated him twice this year. However this time, Srikanth managed to get the better of him. He defeated Christie in 21-15, and 23-21, to clinch the maiden Thomas Cup title for India.Ā The Indian shuttler remained unbeaten throughout the tournament.
