The Indian Cricket Team has not won the T20 World Cup since the inaugural edition of the tournament played in 2007 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. Dhoni has been in sensational form of late during the ongoing IPL. He smacked valuable runs with a higher strike rate. During the last match against LSG, Dhoni showed his class remaining not out on 28 off 9 deliveries that helped CSK post 176 for 6 in 20 overs.
Rohit Sharma was appointed the captain for the T20 World Cup in 2022. They played well in the league stage and the Super Six stage. They were completely outplayed by England in the semi-finals, losing by 10 wickets at Adelaide Oval.
The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is set to start in the USA and West Indies on 2nd June. Indian team is likely to go ahead from the group stage as they are pitted with Pakistan, Ireland, United States of America, and Canada. The top two from each group will qualify for the Super Eight stage.
The Indian Premier League 2024 has seen some lovely performances by the contenders. Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah will certainly feature in the squad for the mega event. Â There is competition for other places including wicket-keeping. Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan are options for that spot.
MS Dhoni has performed brilliantly so far scoring 87 runs at a strike rate of 255 giving a tough time for the bowlers in death overs. At the age of 42 and the fitness problems, the chances of being in the Indian T20 World Cup are very low. He has played only IPL seasons with less training and no competition between seasons.
MS Dhoni played a total of 98 T20I matches for Team India (85 innings) with 2 half-centuries to his name with best score of 56. Under his captaincy, CSK won a total of 5 IPL titles. He also led Pune Rising Super Giants to the finals.
Meanwhile, in an interaction on Cricbuzz, former India opener Virendra Sehwag made a case for MS Dhoni to play for India in the T20 World Cup 2024 as well.
He said, “MS Dhoni has a strike of 255 and doesn’t have an average because he hasn’t been dismissed yet. He has hit 87 runs in 34 balls this season. The kind of schedule we have for the T20 World Cup, how many good teams will we be playing against? He won’t get to bat in the first round.”
“He will only have to keep, which he is already doing (for CSK). (Dhoni’s) batting will come only against 3 teams: Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Even if you consider Pakistan, he will have to bat against 4 teams and only in the last 3 overs. Who is better than him then?” the former Indian bater added.
Scenarios For MS Dhoni To Be With Team India In The T20 World Cup 2024 (Explained)
MS Dhoni could become the mentor for the Indian team as there are young and experienced players to deal with pressure. He has won 3 ICC titles and he could guide the team with his valuable input.
His finishing abilities in this year’s IPL have been brilliant so far. With India needing a finisher, MS Dhoni might return to the squad which looks unlikely.
It will be interesting to see whether the star player will don the blue jersey again or if fans need to stay happy with his IPL performances.
