How Did India Perform In Their Last Test Match At Manchester Before ENG vs IND 2025?

The fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series between India and England is set to begin on Wednesday, July 23, at Old Trafford in Manchester. The historic venue last hosted a Test between these sides in 2014. In that match, then-captain MS Dhoni won the toss and chose to bat first. India got off to a disastrous start, slipping to 8/4 in 5.4 overs, as Anderson and Broad tore through the top order.

MS Dhoni steadied the innings with a fighting 71 off 133 balls. He received some support from Ajinkya Rahane (24) and Ravichandran Ashwin (40), guiding India to a total of 152 before being bowled out. Stuart Broad was the standout bowler for England, delivering a remarkable spell of 6 wickets for just 25 runs in 13.4 overs, including 6 maidens.

England responded strongly with the bat, posting 367 in their first innings, thanks to composed half-centuries from Ian Bell (58), Joe Root (77), and Jos Buttler (70), along with useful contributions from other batters. This gave the hosts a commanding lead of 215 runs. For India, Varun Aaron and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were the most successful bowlers, claiming three wickets each.

However, India’s batting faltered once again in their second innings, as they were dismissed for just 161 runs. England secured a dominant victory by an innings and 54 runs. Moeen Ali played a key role with the ball, taking four wickets in a 13-over spell, while Stuart Broad was named Player of the Match for his impactful performance on Day 1.

England Ahead 2-1 In Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Before 4th Test

England, under Ben Stokes’ leadership, currently holds a 2-1 advantage in the ongoing five-match Test series against India. Although the visitors have shown promising performances throughout, they’ve fallen short in two matches—suffering defeats at Headingley and Lord’s.

India’s only win so far came in the second Test at Edgbaston, which helped them stay competitive in the series. The focus now shifts to Old Trafford in Manchester, where the fourth and penultimate Test will be played. Historically, India has struggled at this venue, having played nine Tests without a single victory. They have lost four times, while the remaining five matches ended in draws.
