Rohit Sharma, on Wednesday, was appointed as Team India’s full-time ODI captain replacing Virat Kohli. Incidentally, Rohit was also appointed as India’s skipper in the shortest format after Kohli relinquished his duties after the ICC T20 World Cup.
The decision to sack Kohli as ODI captain came as a shock as the former expressed his desire to lead the side in the 50-overs till the 2023 ODI World Cup. However, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly confirmed that Kohli was asked to continue in the T20 formats as they wanted a uniform candidate in the limited-overs format.
But Kohli denied continuing as T20I captain which led to his sacking as the 50-overs captain.
“It’s a call that the BCCI and the selectors took together. Actually, the BCCI had requested Virat to not step down as the T20I skipper but obviously, he did not agree. And the selectors then did not feel it right to have two different captains for two white-ball formats,” Ganguly said as quoted by ANI.
While Virat Kohli’s record as ODI captain is amongst the best in the world, Rohit Sharma has also done a decent job as stop-gap captain, winning eight out of 10 ODI matches.
Rohit Sharma earning as full-time limited-overs captain
As per a GQ report, there will be no change in Rohit’s salary from the BCCI. He is paid a sum of INR 7 crore annually by virtue of holding an A+ contract, along with Virat Kohli and pacer Japsrit Bumrah.
Apart from this, he will also be earning a good sum as match fees from the BCCI.
