Ahead of IPL 2025, Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) batting coach Vikram Rathour discussed the future of 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who made history as the youngest player to be signed in the tournament. RR secured his services for ₹1.10 crore at the IPL 2025 auction in Jeddah, a move that took the cricketing world by surprise. Suryavanshi’s exceptional performances in domestic and international cricket earned him this remarkable opportunity.
In domestic cricket, he made headlines during the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25, scoring a blistering 71 off 42 balls for Bihar against Baroda, making him the youngest Indian to register a List A fifty. His international success was equally impressive, as he smashed a 58-ball century against Australia in a youth Test match, the fastest by an Indian at that level. He also played a key role in India’s journey to the ACC U19 Asia Cup final, scoring crucial half-centuries along the way.
Uncertain IPL Debut in 2025
Despite his talent, Rathour indicated that Suryavanshi’s debut in IPL 2025 is uncertain and will depend on the team’s strategy. While praising the youngster’s ability, Rathour emphasized that decisions regarding his inclusion will be based on factors like pitch conditions, opposition, and team requirements.

“I am not sure if we will use him or not; it will depend on the strategy, the surface, and the opposition. We signed him because he is a very special player. He may be young, but his power is rare for someone his age. If he works hard, I am confident he will become a great player,” Rathour stated during a press conference.
The Royals’ coaching staff, including Rathour and newly appointed head coach Rahul Dravid, will carefully assess the best way to integrate Suryavanshi into the squad. Rathour and Dravid share a successful coaching history, having guided India to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title and top rankings in all formats.
Rajasthan Royals’ Season Ahead
As RR prepares for the IPL 2025 season, their focus remains on optimizing team performance. Under the leadership of captain Sanju Samson, the team is set to face Sunrisers Hyderabad in their tournament opener. Rathour expressed confidence in the squad, stating that coaching in IPL is different from international cricket but follows the same fundamental principle—helping players maximize their potential.
While Suryavanshi’s debut remains uncertain, his presence in the squad marks a significant milestone in cricket history. His journey will be closely watched as he continues to develop under the guidance of experienced coaches and teammates.
