Indian skipper Rohit Sharma delivered a stunning performance in the second ODI against England, scoring his 32nd ODI century in just 90 balls. Having struggled with low scores in recent matches, Rohit silenced critics with a composed and calculated innings that featured 12 fours and seven sixes.
His efforts guided India to a dominant nine-wicket victory, sealing the three-match series 2-0. Reflecting on his approach, Rohit shared that he consciously broke down his batting strategy to adapt to the conditions in Cuttack.
“I wanted to bat as deep as possible and focus on constructing my innings carefully,” he said. Unlike T20s or Tests, ODIs require a balanced approach, and Rohit executed it flawlessly, ensuring he stayed at the crease while maintaining an aggressive scoring rate.
Precision and Partnership, The Key to Success
Rohit acknowledged that England’s bowlers targeted his body and the stumps, requiring him to adjust his technique and find gaps effectively. Playing on a black-soil pitch that allowed the ball to skid, he ensured he used the full face of the bat to time his shots perfectly.
He also credited his opening partner, Shubman Gill, and teammate Shreyas Iyer for their crucial support in building a solid foundation.

“Gill is a classy player who remains composed under pressure, and his numbers prove his ability,” Rohit remarked. The duo’s opening partnership set the tone for India’s chase, with Gill contributing a fluent 60 and helping add 136 runs in just 16.4 overs.
Middle Overs Control and Looking Ahead
India’s bowlers played a crucial role in restricting England, especially during the middle overs—a phase Rohit believes can dictate the match’s outcome.
“If you squeeze the middle overs and take wickets, scoring runs becomes difficult for the opposition,” he explained, citing their effective strategy in Nagpur as well.
While India has shown impressive form, Rohit emphasized the importance of continuous improvement ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy, starting on February 19. Rather than focusing on specific areas, he wants the team to enhance their overall game and maintain clarity in their roles.
Vice-captain Shubman Gill also praised Rohit’s innings, stating, “Batting with Rohit bhai always feels easy. His ability to take on the bowlers is something we’ve seen time and again in ODIs.”
With this emphatic win, India heads into future tournaments with confidence and momentum.
