Veteran India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin responded to journalist Rajdeep Sardesai’s tweet regarding Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal during the Lord’s Test in the 2023 Ashes. He expressed that he would be very disappointed with himself if he got out in a similar way to the England batter.

Jonny Bairstow was stumped by Alex Carey during the Lord’s Test after the batter walked out of his crease in a leisurely manner. He failed to confirm with the Australian fielders if the ball had been dead, before walking out of the crease. The incident sparked a debate, with some former cricketers condemning Alex Carey’s actions. However, Ravichandran Ashwin backed the Australian wicket-keeper in his Tweet.

Senior Journalist Rajdeep Sardesai reacted to Ashwin’s tweet, asking him if he would have been happy to be given out in the same way. He tweeted,

“Sorry to bang on about this but I do love the game.. To my friend @ashwinravi99 and all those who believe that Johnny Bairstow was fairly OUT .. I have a simple Qs: would you be happy if you were given out in that way? That’s the real test. Do unto others what you would do to yourself! #Bairstow.”

Indian spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin responded, “I would be disappointed, very disappointed, in fact, gutted with myself for getting out like that.”

Alex Carey knew Jonny Bairstow will leave the crease: Ravichandran Ashwin

Team India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin also spoke about the incident in a video on his Youtube channel. He expressed that Alex Carey was aware that Jonny Bairstow would walk out of his crease. He added that the wicket-keeper was ready to stump Bairstow.

“Take a look at the replay again. Alex Carey didn’t wait for a second to hit the stumps. He knew Bairstow will leave the crease and that’s why he threw at the stumps immediately. Bairstow didn’t take a single look behind and started leaving his crease,” said Ravichandran Ashwin.
