Afghanistan’s opening batter, Ibrahim Zadran, made history in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy by setting the highest individual score in the tournament’s history. Zadran played a remarkable knock of 177 runs off 146 balls against England during their Group B match in Lahore. His performance surpassed the previous record of 165 runs, held by England’s Ben Duckett, who had achieved this feat earlier in the same tournament.
Dominating Performance at Gaddafi Stadium
Zadran faced a formidable England bowling attack at a packed Gaddafi Stadium and displayed exceptional skill, accumulating runs with ease all around the ground. He struck 12 boundaries and six sixes in his innings, showcasing his aggressive approach. His remarkable knock not only propelled Afghanistan’s total but also left a significant mark on Champions Trophy history. Before Zadran’s historic achievement, Duckett’s 165 runs against Australia in Lahore had briefly been the highest score in the tournament.

Historic High Scores in ODI and Afghanistan Cricket
In terms of individual scores in ODI cricket in Pakistan, Zadran’s 177 is among the highest, joining a list of iconic innings. Some of the other notable individual performances in Champions Trophy history include Nathan Astle’s unbeaten 145 against the USA in 2004, Andy Flower’s 145 against India in 2002, and Sachin Tendulkar’s 141 against Australia in 1998.
Zadran’s 177 is also the highest score ever achieved by an Afghan cricketer, further solidifying his place in the country’s cricketing history. Other top scores for Afghanistan include his own 162 against Sri Lanka in 2022 and Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s 151 against Pakistan in 2023.
Ibrahim Zadran’s record-breaking 177 against England not only etched his name in ICC Champions Trophy history but also reinforced Afghanistan’s growing stature in international cricket. His dominant innings showcased his exceptional talent and ability to perform under pressure against top-tier teams. As Afghanistan continues to make strides on the global stage, Zadran’s knock will serve as an inspiration for future generations, proving that Afghan cricket is capable of competing with the best.
