The International Cricket Council (ICC) has mentioned that the initial ball-tracking image used for Rassie van der Dussen’s Decision Review System (DRS) evaluation in the second half of the South Africa-Pakistan ODI was “incomplete” and displayed inaccurately.
In the ninth over of the innings, on the fifth delivery, right-handed Van der Dussen was initially given out LBW (Leg Before Wicket) by the on-field umpire. The ball struck him around the knee area as he attempted to flick it while moving backward.
Van der Dussen requested a review, and the third umpire switched to ball-tracking after the Ultra-Edge technology indicated a flat line. During this process, a ball-tracking window briefly appeared, indicating that the impact was ‘umpire’s call’ and the ball would have missed the stumps.
However, this display was quickly removed, and the cameras then showed the Pakistani players on the field. Then, the ball-tracking technology was shown again, and it said that the on-field umpire’s decision was correct for both where the ball hit and whether it would hit the stumps.
So, the South African player had to leave the field. This caused a lot of commotion and led to various theories on the internet.
“In today’s match between South Africa and Pakistan, an incomplete graphic was erroneously displayed during the LBW review of Rassie van der Dussen,” an ICC spokesperson told Sportskeeda. “The completed graphic with the right details was ultimately displayed.”
DRS has been a subject of significant scrutiny in this tournament. On-field rulings in favour of Australian players Steve Smith and Marcus Stoinis were changed following disputed decisions in the match against South Africa in Lucknow.
More recently, David Warner was visibly upset when DRS couldn’t reverse an on-field LBW (Leg Before Wicket) decision against him.
South Africa secure a close victory despite the controversy surrounding the DRS
Despite the intense emotions and the drama surrounding the Decision Review System (DRS), South Africa managed to secure a crucial victory with a narrow one-wicket margin in the match. They were on the path to victory when their top run-scorer, Aiden Markram, was dismissed in the 41st over.
Gerald Coetezee also departed in the following over, putting them in a difficult situation. With only 21 runs required and three wickets in hand, Keshav Maharaj and Lungi Ngidi played cautiously.
However, Lungi Ngidi was caught in a brilliant catch by Haris Rauf. However, Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi faced numerous tense moments but ultimately secured the victory in the 48th over.
