ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: Marcus Stoinis doubtful For Australia’s Opener Against India Due To Hamstring Issue

Australian cricketer Marcus Stoinis is doubtful for their ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 opener against India on Sunday, October 8 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Coach Andrew McDonald revealed that the all-rounder is struggling with a hamstring issue ahead of the marquee clash.

Marcus Stoinis pulled up sore after Australia’s first ODI match against India last month. He missed the remaining two ODI matches of the series. His participation in Australia’s opener against India is also uncertain. Speaking to Australian media ahead of the match, Andrew McDonald said,

“That happened after the Mohali game. He pulled up a little bit sore from that game and then further investigation obviously led to that being a slight hamstring and then he’s just rehabilitating.”

“It’ll be touch and go for game one. He hasn’t certainly been ruled out of that but we weren’t prepared to risk him in those practice games. So he’s being probably slow played a little bit with the view to these next couple of days being really important for him to press for selection for game one. We’ll see how it unfolds,” he added.

Andrew McDonald shares an update on Adam Zampa

Australian coach Andrew McDonald also expressed that spinner Adam Zampa’s workload was also being managed ahead of the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. Zampa is the lone specialist spinner in the Australian squad for the mega-event. He did not bowl in the two warm-up matches against Pakistan and Netherlands leading into the tournament. McDonald said,

“He did pull up sore from the second game in the ODI series but nothing significant.”
