ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: Morne Morkel Resigns As Pakistan’s Bowling Coach

Former cricketer Morne Morkel has resigned as Pakistan’s bowling coach following their dismal performance in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. The Pakistan Cricket Board made the announcement on Monday, November 13. They will name Morne Morkel’s replacement in due course, as Pakistan will be taking on Australia next month.

Morne Morkel joined Pakistan as the bowling coach earlier this year, replacing Shaun Tait. His first assignment was when Pakistan toured Sri Lanka. He was part of the revamped coaching group along with Mickey Arthur, Andrew Puttick and Grant Bradburn. However, within six months, Morkel announced his decision to step down as the bowling coach. In a statement released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), he wrote,

“Morne Morkel has resigned as the bowling coach of the Pakistan Men’s team. The former South Africa fast bowler joined the Pakistan team on a six-month contract in June this year. Pakistan Cricket Board will announce his replacement in due course.”

Pakistan’s performance in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023

The Pakistan cricket team finished the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 at number five with four wins from nine matches. They failed to qualify for the knockouts of the tournament. Pakistan’s bowling especially struggled to restrict the flow of runs in the tournament. Shaheen Afridi was the leading wicket-taker for them, picking 18 wickets in nine matches. Meanwhile, Mohammad Rizwan was the leading run-scorer with 395 runs at an average of 65.83, including a century and a fifty.

The Pakistan team will be looking to put behind the World Cup loss and make a fresh start. They are all set to take on Australia in a three-match Test series in Australia. The first test will take place on Thursday, December 14 at the Perth Stadium. They will also play an away limited-overs tour against New Zealand, featuring five T20I matches.
