In the aftermath of the thrilling first semifinal of the ODI World Cup 2023 between India and New Zealand at Wankhede Stadium on November 15, a heartwarming moment unfolded in the dressing room. Ravi Ashwin, visibly impressed by Mohammed Shami’s historic seven-wicket haul, displayed his admiration by kissing Shami’s hand.

Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, Team India sought redemption and emerged victorious by a convincing 70-run margin, securing their place in the final. The final showdown would pit them against the winners of the second semifinal scheduled for November 16 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

The game itself was a spectacle, with India setting an imposing total of 397 after opting to bat first. Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer led the charge with impressive scores of 117 and 105, respectively. In defense of the formidable target, Mohammed Shami delivered a stellar performance, achieving career-best figures of 7/57.

Supporting him, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Kuldeep Yadav contributed with one wicket each. Mohammed Shami’s journey in the ODI World Cup 2023 has been nothing short of a dream run. Initially benched for the first four games, the seasoned pacer made a significant impact in the fifth match against New Zealand in Dharamshala, claiming a five-wicket haul.

His exceptional form continued with another outstanding performance against Sri Lanka in Mumbai, where he secured a fifer, posting career-best figures of 5/18 and playing a pivotal role in India’s 302-run victory over the Kusal Mendis-led side. During the clash against New Zealand, Shami etched his name in the record books as the fastest bowler to reach fifty wickets in the history of ODI World Cups.

This milestone was achieved by dismissing Tom Latham, marking his fourth wicket in the game. Shami’s overall contribution stands at 23 wickets in six innings, boasting an impressive average of 9.13 and an excellent economy rate of 5.01. His stellar performances have undoubtedly been a highlight of India’s journey in the tournament, earning him well-deserved accolades and admiration from teammates like Ravi Ashwin.
