ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: Shubman Gill’s World Cup Spot Is Uncertain Due To Health Issues

The recent news about Shubman Gill‘s health is a significant setback for Team India. The situation regarding Shubman Gill’s health is becoming increasingly worrisome for Team India.

On Monday evening, the star opener was discharged from a Chennai hospital after recovering from dengue fever, which was a positive update for Rohit Sharma and his team in New Delhi for the Afghanistan match on Wednesday.

However, Gill’s availability for the high-profile World Cup match against Pakistan at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium is now uncertain. This latest update is a major setback, with reports suggesting that Gill’s participation in the World Cup may be in question, and selectors will decide on his replacement.

Shubman Gill might not play in the World Cup because of health problems

Gill entered the 2023 World Cup as India’s most prolific batsman, having notched up 1230 runs this year at an impressive average of 72.35, including five centuries and as many fifties.

However, before he could start his World Cup journey, which the cricketing world eagerly anticipated due to his remarkable performances in the past nine months, Gill fell ill with a high fever in Chennai and was later diagnosed with dengue.

The 24-year-old was absent for India’s first match against Australia and is now confirmed to miss the upcoming game against Afghanistan on Wednesday.

Despite Gill and the Indian team’s optimism regarding his recovery from dengue this week, the virus often leaves the body weakened even after testing negative.

This means he’s unlikely to participate in the match against Pakistan and may also be sidelined for the game against Bangladesh in Pune on October 19. Due to Shubman Gill’s health concerns, there are reports suggesting that selectors may need to consider having a replacement ready.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was chosen as an opener during the Australia series and even scored a half-century in Mohali, is the primary option as a backup opener.

He is followed by the left-handed batting sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal. Both players showcased excellent form in the recent Asian Games tournament where India secured a gold medal.

In the opening match, Ishan Kishan stepped in for Gill but had a challenging start. The Afghanistan game will provide an opportunity for the left-hander to demonstrate his value once more before the crucial Pakistan match in Ahmedabad.
