The Indian captain Rohit Sharma looked in sublime touch right from the word go against Afghanistan during the 2nd match of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 played at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi on 10th October 2023.

Chasing 273 runs to win, Rohit put enough pressure on the Afghanistan bowlers right from the word go. His batting looked in great touch hitting boundaries and sixes with ease. The Indian captain showed his class by taking on Afghanistan pace bowlers and never allowed them to settle.

He completed his fifty off 30 deliveries and maintained enough pressure on the Afghanistan bowlers. He timed the ball brilliantly keeping scoreboard ticking making life tough for inexperienced Afghan bowling. Ishan Kishan joined the party with some attacking shots and gave great support to Indian captain Rohit.

However, the Indian captain dominated the Afghanistan bowlers and reached a century off 63 deliveries. With this brilliant knock, he became the fastest centurion by an Indian batter in World Cup history. He also reached his 7th century in World Cup history. It was a brilliant display by Rohit dominating the Afghanistan bowlers. The Indian captain looked in sensational touch hitting boundaries at will on a superb batting paradise at Kotla.

Ishan Kishan was eventually dismissed for 47. Rohit and Ishan Kishan put on 156 runs for the opening wicket laying a strong foundation. The Indian captain also surpassed Chris Gayle’s record of most sixes in international cricket.

Rohit began his World Cup career in the 2015 edition. He showed his class with a match-winning knock against Bangladesh in the quarterfinals that helped India to qualify for the semi-finals. He showed his domination in the 2019 edition of the World Cup finishing as the leading run-getter with 648 runs from 9 matches ( 9 innings) including 5 centuries and 1 half-century with the best score of 140 against Pakistan.

Before this, Kapil Dev held the record for the fastest century by an Indian player in World Cup history with 72 deliveries.
