Pakistan leg-spinner Usama Mir has been named the concussion substitute for all-rounder Shadab Khan during the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 match against South Africa on Friday, October 27 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The concussion substitute was approved by Match Referee, Richie Richardson.

Shadab Khan hit his head while fielding during the second innings of the match. The incident took place on the second delivery of the first over. Shadab Khan while attempting a direct hit threw the ball, but got off-balanced. He hurt his head and shoulder as he fell to the ground. The all-rounder needed immediate medical attention and was taken off the ground. Pakistan’s management brought in Usama Mir as Shadab’s concussion substitute for the match.

“Pakistan have taken a concussion substitute for Shadab Khan in the ongoing match against South Africa. Usama Mir will replace Shadab. Shadab hit his head while fielding. He briefly took the field, but after a thorough assessment, the Pakistan team medical panel decided to replace him. The substitute request was approved by the match referee,” wrote the Pakistan Cricket Board on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter).

Usama Mir has now become the first-ever concussion substitute in ODI World Cup history. He made an immediate impact on the game, dismissing the set batter Rassie van der Dussen for 21 runs. Earlier in the match, Shadab Khan played a key role, scoring 43 runs off 36 deliveries with three boundaries and two sixes. Pakistan put on 270 runs on the board, batting first.
