ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: [WATCH] Angelo Mathews Impresses In His Return, Runs Out Joe Root Brilliantly
Angelo Mathew affected a run-out

Angelo Mathews made a strong return in the World Cup match against England. He ran out Joe Root with an excellent fielding effort right after taking a wicket in his first over. This incident occurred in the 10th over of England’s innings when Root was attempting a run but was sent back by his partner Jonny Bairstow.

Root scored only three runs from 10 balls before being dismissed. The run-out occurred during the 10th over of England’s innings. Root played a ball from Maheesh Theekshana towards the point region and started to run. However, Jonny Bairstow, who was at the opposite end, gestured to Joe Root to go back, telling him not to run. At the same time, Mathews grabbed the ball and threw it quickly to wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis.

Mendis removed the bails swiftly. Despite making a desperate dive, Root couldn’t get back to the crease. He walked off the field before the third umpire confirmed the decision. You can watch Joe Root’s wicket here:

Sri Lanka is doing much better than England in the 2023 World Cup match

Sri Lanka, who were told to bowl first in the 2023 World Cup match against England, have been in control. Angelo Mathews took the first wicket by dismissing Dawid Malan after a run-out. Kasun Rajitha got Jonny Bairstow out, and Lahiru Kumara removed England’s captain Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone with low scores. Currently, England is at 89/5 after 20 overs, and Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali are batting.

In the game, England decided to make three substitutions, leaving out Harry Brook, Gus Atkinson, and Sam Curran, and bringing in Chris Woakes, Moeen Ali, and Liam Livingstone to the starting lineup. On the other hand, Sri Lanka made two changes, with Angelo Mathews and Lahiru Kumara stepping in for Dushan Hemantha and Chamika Karunaratne, respectively.

For those unfamiliar, England hasn’t beaten Sri Lanka in World Cup matches since 1999. Since then, the Sri Lankan team has claimed victory over England in the 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019 editions of the ICC tournament. In the current competition, England has lost three out of four matches, with their only victory coming against Bangladesh with a 137-run margin. Similarly, Sri Lanka has secured one win, defeating the Netherlands by five wickets.
