ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: [WATCH] Kusal Mendis Takes A Stunner To Dismiss In-Form Jos Buttler

During the 2023 World Cup match against England on Thursday, Sri Lanka’s captain, Kusal Mendis, made a remarkable catch to dismiss Jos Buttler, his English counterpart. This pivotal moment occurred in the first innings as Buttler and Ben Stokes were attempting to revive England’s innings following an early collapse.

England, choosing to bat first, found themselves in trouble at 68/3 after 13.2 overs. Although openers Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan had promising starts, they couldn’t capitalize on them. Joe Root was run out for just 3 runs. Buttler, coming to the crease at this challenging point, managed to score 8 runs from 6 balls before Lahiru Kumara and Kusal Mendis combined to remove him.

Buttler nicked the ball while attempting an off-side drive, and Mendis made a fantastic diving catch to provide his team with a significant breakthrough.

Despite England’s recent successes in white-ball formats, such as their 2019 ODI World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup victories, the defending champions have been struggling in the current tournament, with three losses in their first four games. This has not gone unnoticed, as former Indian pacer Sreesanth discussed the matter in an interview with Sportskeeda.”

“It doesn’t look like England have come here to win the World Cup. Right from their first match, it didn’t seem as if they were prepared. That’s how cricket is; they will learn. The fearless cricket that England talk about, South Africa played that kind of cricket and beat them,” he continued. “The kind of cricket that South Africa are playing is admirable. They showed great intent. The last few overs were like a video game, as every ball was being hit for a four or a six.”
