Disheartened, Virat Kohli left the post-match presentation following the 2023 World Cup without providing the usual interview for winning the Player of the Tournament award.
The right-handed batsman concluded as the leading run-scorer in the competition, amassing 765 runs at an average of 95.62 in 11 matches, setting a World Cup record.
Despite his efforts, Virat Kohli’s performance couldn’t secure the cup for India. He was dismissed for 54 (63) in the final against Australia in Ahmedabad.
India, batting first, got all out for 240, falling 30-40 runs short of the par score. Australia, led by Travis Head’s remarkable hundred (137 off 120), successfully chased the target in just 43 overs.
The President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Roger Binny, presented the award to Kohli. Although the presentation host, Ravi Shastri, seemed prepared for the interview, Kohli had a moment of eye contact with him and then walked away.

Kohli’s 765 runs set a new record for the most runs by a batsman in a single edition of a World Cup. The previous record was held by Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 673 runs from 11 matches in the 2003 edition.
It’s noteworthy that India also lost the final of that tournament to Australia.
Pat Cummins noted the crowd’s silence after Virat Kohli’s wicket for Australia
Pat Cummins, the Australian captain, inspired his team by encouraging them to quiet the 95,000-strong Ahmedabad crowd. He later mentioned that his team recognized that silence when Kohli was dismissed unexpectedly.
“We took a second in the huddle just to acknowledge the silence that was going around the crowd (after the wicket). It just felt like it was one of those days where it was all made for him to score another hundred like he normally does. That (wicket) was satisfying,” Cummins said.
Australia secured their sixth ODI World Cup title, winning in eight final appearances.
