ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: [WATCH]- Mohammed Shami Gets Emotional After Setting A New World Cup Record Against Sri Lanka

Mohammed Shami made history by securing a crucial five-wicket victory against Sri Lanka in the ODI World Cup. Mohammed Shami, along with fast bowlers Bumrah and Siraj, caused a big problem for Sri Lanka in the ICC World Cup 2023 match at Wankhede Stadium.

Shami got five wickets, making it his fourth time in ODIs, and India, led by Rohit Sharma, won by a huge 302 runs in Mumbai against Sri Lanka. Shami has surpassed Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath to become the top wicket-taker for India in the ODI World Cup.

He achieved this remarkable feat by taking 45 wickets in just 14 innings, positioning himself among the cricket greats at the World Cup stage.

In comparison, Shami achieved this in 14 innings, while Zaheer Khan secured 44 wickets in 23 innings, and Javagal Srinath collected 44 wickets across 34 innings at the World Cup.

Mohammed Shami rejoices with his teammates upon dismissing Sri Lanka’s Kasun Rajitha

Discussing Shami’s outstanding performance, the fast bowler had a significant impact when he dismissed Charith Asalanka in the 10th over.

Shami then sent Dushan Hemantha and Dushmantha Chameera back to the pavilion without scoring any runs as Sri Lanka crumbled, managing only 55 runs in 19.4 overs.

In the 17th over, the experienced pacer also got rid of Kasun Rajitha, solidifying his position as India’s top wicket-taker in the ODI World Cup. Shami, the paceman, secured five wickets while conceding only 18 runs in five overs.

With a commanding 302-run victory, Team India, led by Shami, became the first team to reach the semi-finals of the ICC World Cup.

“I always focus on hitting the good areas and length. Very happy (on becoming India’s leading wicket-taker in World Cups) It’s very important to be in rhythm in white ball cricket and hit the good areas.”

“If you hit the good areas with the new ball you will get assistance off the pitch and for me length matters a lot. The kind of support we get from the crowd, I want to thank each and every one of them.”

”We also get a lot of support whenever we travel outside India as well. The dressing room is in a very good space,” Shami said after he was rewarded as the Player of the Match.
