Shubman Gill came very close to scoring his first century in the ODI Cricket World Cup but was dismissed by Dilshan Madushanka during the 2023 World Cup match between India and Sri Lanka. Gill played superbly, hitting 11 fours and two sixes.
He was just eight runs away from a century when he got caught by wicket-keeper Kusal Mendis. The crowd at the Wankhede Stadium was shocked, and Sara Tendulkar’s reaction went viral on social media. Sri Lanka’s captain Kusal Mendis chose to field first.

India, the only undefeated team in the tournament, decided not to make any changes to their lineup, and their captain Rohit Sharma opted to bat first on his home ground at the Wankhede Stadium. South Africa had previously scored 399 in this venue during the World Cup.

“I would have batted first,” said Rohit. “It’s a good pitch…Under lights, it will be nice for our seamers to bowl. It’s a great honour to captain India at the World Cup (on a ground) where I’ve grown up playing. As a team, we thrive on getting better. Obviously, it’s important for us to not get carried away and it’s important to stay balanced.”
Sri Lanka decided to make one change in their lineup from the previous match against Afghanistan. They included leg-spinner Dushan Hemantha in place of Dhananjaya de Silva.
The team led by Mendis has been defeated in four out of their six matches in the 10-team tournament
“I think batting second is better than batting first. The players have done well in a couple of matches and are giving their best. It’s a very important three games (coming up) for us,” said Mendis.
