The International Cricket Council has delivered a strong verdict on the pitch used for the fourth Ashes Test between Australia and England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Following widespread criticism, the ICC officially rated the surface as “Unsatisfactory” and imposed one demerit point on the venue. The decision came after the match ended inside two days, with conditions heavily favouring bowlers from the very start. England went on to win the Test by four wickets, but the nature of the contest raised serious concerns about pitch balance and quality.
Match Referee Explains Decision Behind Rating
Match referee Jeff Crowe outlined the reasoning behind the assessment in his official report. According to ICC guidelines, pitches must offer a fair contest between bat and ball, something the MCG surface failed to provide. Crowe highlighted the extraordinary number of wickets that fell and the lack of meaningful batting contributions. “The MCG pitch was too much in favour of the bowlers. With 20 wickets falling on the first day, 16 on the second day and no batter even reaching a half-century, the pitch was ‘Unsatisfactory’ as per the guidelines and the venue gets one demerit point,” he stated.
An ICC statement further confirmed the action, saying, “The pitch at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the venue for the fourth Ashes Test, has been deemed ‘Unsatisfactory’ with the venue handed one demerit point under the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process.” Under ICC rules, a venue that accumulates six demerit points faces a 12-month suspension from hosting international matches.
Criticism From Players And Impact On The Series
The pitch conditions attracted strong reactions from both teams and administrators. England captain Ben Stokes expressed his disappointment, remarking that the surface “wasn’t great for the game.” Cricket Australia also acknowledged the issue, calling it “bad for business,” as fans expect competitive contests that last longer and showcase batting and bowling skills equally. In total, spectators saw 36 wickets fall in just 142 overs, with not a single batter reaching the 50-run mark, underlining how dominant the bowlers were throughout the Test.
While England celebrated a rare achievement by securing their first Test victory on Australian soil since 2011, the result did not alter the overall outcome of the Ashes series. Australia had already sealed the trophy by winning the opening three Tests, taking an unassailable 3–0 lead. Attention now shifts to the fifth and final Test, scheduled to begin in Sydney on January 4, where both teams will hope for a surface that offers a more balanced and compelling contest.
