ICC ODI World Cup 2023: 3 Reasons Why Sanju Samson’s Exclusion From The Squad Is Controversial

The talented wicketkeeper batter from Kerala, Sanju Samson has not been selected in the 2023 World Cup squad and Asian Games squad that will take place in Hangzhou. Samson was dropped from the 15-member squad after disappointing performances during the T20I series against West Indies.

The Indian team is slated to take on Australia in the 3-match ODI series at home from 22nd September onwards and has not been selected for the squad. He was included in the 15-member squad for the World Cup and named as backup for KL Rahul during the Asia Cup 2023. Sanju Samson was sent home after KL Rahul was included in the Super 4 match against Pakistan.

Sanju Samson was not picked in the Asian Games squad as Jitesh Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh have been included as wicketkeeper batters for the prestigious event. Indian team will be led by Ruturaj Gaikwad who hopes to lead India to at podium.

Here we look at the 3 Reasons Why Sanju Samson’s absence from World Cup 2023 and Asian Games Squad is controversial.

  1. Deserve Chance Ahead of Suryakumar Yadav

KL Rahul proved his worth after a century against Pakistan in a Super 4 match and superb knock against Sri Lanka on a tough batting pitch. Ishan Kishan also proved his abilities with the bat with a brilliant 82 during the league stage match against Pakistan in Kandy.

Samson has been a consistent performer in One-day international cricket ahead of Suryakumar Yadav. The talented wicketkeeper from Kerala, Samson made 390 runs from 12 matches at an average of 55.71 with 3 half-centuries to his name. He has performed brilliantly for Team India under pressure to keep his spot.

Surykumar Yadav managed to score 537 runs from 25 ODI Innings at an average of 24.40 including 2 half-centuries. He has been included in the 2023 World Cup squad despite poor form. His last fifty in the ODI format came in February 2022 and has not scored above 35 in his last 19 outings. Sanju Samson looked more consistent while Suryakumar has not performed well. Suryakumar has been included in the ODI series against Australia and would look to perform to stake a claim.

  1. Being a certain pick, Jitesh Sharma beat Sanju Samson for the Asian Games squad

After Sanju Samson was not included in the 15-member squad for the World Cup 2023, he deserved a place in the 2023 Asian Games cricketing event.

Punjab Kings wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma and hard-hitting Prabhsimran Singh have been included in the Asian Games squad. His performance with Rajasthan Royals in the IPL would be handed the job of leading the Indian team in the prestigious event. Ruturaj Gaikwad has been named captain of the Indian squad which is not a bad option.

Sanju Samson should have been in the Asian Games squad after being not selected in the 2023 World Cup squad. With the way he was playing, he was a certain pick to be in the squad for a continental event.

  1. The way he has been treated is disappointing

Sanju Samson has been treated in an unfair manner by the BCCI. His performance in the T20I format is not up to the mark and the way he throws his wicket is very disturbing.

Sanju Samson was given a chance in the T20I series against West Indies but failed to capitalize. So far, he has played 21 innings with 374 runs with an average of 19.88. During his T20I career, Samson scored only one half-century and best score of 77 against Ireland.

India decided to rest seniors like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Hardik Pandya in the first ODI matches against Australia. They had a chance to try Sanju Samson but gave chances to other Indian players.

Sanju Samson’s performance in the T20I format cannot be a reason to drop him in ODIs. In contrast, Suryakumar Yadav’s abilities in the shortest format cannot allow him to be selected in 50 over format.
