ICC T20 World Cup 2021: How Can India Qualify For The Top Four After Beating Scotland?

The Indian team is battling to make it to the knockouts of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. After two consecutive losses against Pakistan and New Zealand in the tournament, India has made a comeback beating Afghanistan and now Scotland by a substantial margin.

On Friday, the Indian skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and chose to bowl. They Mohammad Shami and Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets each to bowl Scotland out for a mere 85 runs on the board.

In reply, the Indian openers got the team off to a flying start. They put on 70 runs in less than 5 overs for the first wicket stand, before Rohit got lbw for 30 runs by Bradley Wheal. Soon after, KL Rahul was dismissed for 50 runs. India chased down the target in 6.3 overs, with 8 wickets in hand.

With Pakistan already qualified for the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021  from group 2, only one spot is up for grabs. Despite the win, India still has a long way to go to qualify. Let’s take a look at the qualification scenario for the Indian team.

1 – Afghanistan beats New Zealand

With three wins in four matches, New Zealand ranks second on the points table of Group 2. They are ahead in the race to qualify for the semis, with two points ahead of India and Afghanistan at this stage. For India to go past New Zealand, Afghanistan needs to emerge as a winner in their upcoming encounter against the Kiwis. In addition, the margin of win for Afghanistan should be small, which allows India to be ahead on NRR. If New Zealand wins the game, they will qualify for the semis.

2 – India beats Namibia

After a dominating win against Scotland, the Indian team will be high on confidence. They need to continue their winning run against Namibia to qualify for the semis. India has four points from four matches in their pocket. A win against Namibia will take them to six points. Though, much depends on the Afghanistan vs New Zealand match.

If India defeats Namibia and Afghanistan beats New Zealand 9 (by a small margin), both the teams end up on six points and India goes to the semis basis higher Net Run Rate. However, if Afghanistan wins by a huge margin, India will have to ensure they defeat Namibia with a better margin to pip Afghanistan on NRR.
