Australian opener David Warner was going through tough times in his cricketing career off late. The left-hander was lost the captaincy of the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise and was also dropped from the playing XI in IPL 2021. However, he has stormed back to form, slamming a fifty against Sri Lanka in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
Chasing 154 runs at the Dubai International Stadium, David Warner and Aaron Finch got Australia off to a good start. Warner scored 65 runs off 42 deliveries, including 10 boundaries, to help his side get over the line. Australia won the match by 7 wickets, registering their second win of the tournament.
David Warner started off his innings positively. He hit his first boundary by reverse sweeping off Maheesh Theekshana’s bowling. Warner pointed out that it was the same shot that resulted in his wicket against India in the warm-ups. However, he stressed that it’s a low-risk shot and helps to put the pressure back on the bowler. He said,
“I got criticized when I got out to Ashwin in the practice game playing the same shot. We know which bowlers are bowling what, we know where the fields are and we know how to try and apply pressure. If it comes off, it comes off.”
“When they’re coming over the wicket, they’ve obviously got their carrom ball to come straight down the line. For me, it’s actually a low-risk shot to go with the spin and because you’ve only got two (fielders) out to protect, you’ve got to back yourself. It’s a shot that I favor. You’ve got to apply pressure and that’s how I start my innings against spin,” he added.

The Australian opening batter, David Warner has also expressed that he has never played to give an answer back to the critics. He believes that one has to stay confident and keep a smile while going through tough times. Warner said,
“Shutting the critics down? No, never. That’s the world of sport. When you ride the highs, you’ve got to ride the lows and you’ve got to stay confident, keep a smile on your face, and never let it get to you.”
Australia will take on England in their next ICC T20 World Cup match on October 30 at the Dubai International Stadium.
