Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar wants Mujeeb Ur Rahman to be fit for Afghanistan’s last group game against New Zealand. India’s chances of making the semi-finals depend on whether the Afghan side can beat the Kiwis to stage an upset. If they can do so India can make it to the last four given that it is almost a guarantee that Virat Kohli’s men will beat Namibia in their last game.

Mujeeb last played for Afghanistan in the match against Scotland where he picked a record-scripting five-wicket haul, which included three wickets in one over. However, he missed the matches against Pakistan and India where his side lost by big margins as the mystery spinner was sidelined with an injury.

Hailing him as the key element in the Afghan bowling attack, Sunil Gavaskar said that he would love Mujeeb to be back in the playing lineup for Afghanistan against New Zealand. Mujeeb along with Rashid Khan and Rashid Khan can definitely pose problems for the Kiwi batters who are not that good players of spin.

“I just want Mujeeb to be fit for that game. That would mean an additional mystery spinner against New Zealand. If he along with Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi can weave their magic then…Yesterday against Afghanistan India got a little toe in. Now they will have to hold forte. If Afghanistan beat New Zealand, they have smashed the door. Mujeeb is going to be such a key element for that game because he is very difficult to pick just like Varun Chakravarthy and he has got a little more experience than him. So he and Rashid Khan are going to be the key,” he said in a conversation with Star Sports after India’s eight-wicket win against Scotland on Friday in Dubai.

India’s hopes entirely depend on the Afghanistan-New Zealand gave as their campaign is hanging by a thread quite literally.
