Ravi Shastri, whose tenure as India’s head coach ended on Monday, has backed vice-captain Rohit Sharma to take over T20 captaincy. In September this year, Virat Kohli announced his decision to step down from the leadership job in the shortest format for India following the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
After India’s exit from the tournament, Ravi Shastri asserted that Rohit Sharma is ready to take up the job. He highlighted the opener’s record with the Mumbai Indians. Rohit is the most successful skipper in the Indian Premier League. Ravi Shastri said:
“I think in Rohit you’ve got a very capable guy; he’s won so many IPLs and he’s the vice-captain of this side. He’s ready in the wings to take that job.”
Rohit Sharma has previously led India in Virat Kohli’s absence on several occasions in limited-overs cricket. He has captained the country in 19 T20Is and has a win percentage of 78.94.
We’ll always have a strong T20 team: Ravi Shastri
Despite India’s disappointing campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, Ravi Shastri believes India will always have a strong team in the T20 format. He further added, that IPL produces a lot of young talent, which builds a strong core for the T20 format.
Ravi Shastri also backed his successor Rahul Dravid to scale new heights as the coach of the side. Dravid was recently announced by the BCCI as the new head coach of the national team.
“And as far as the T20 team goes, I think we’ll always have a strong team. We might have not won a World Cup but going forward you’ll continue to have a very strong team because the IPL throws a lot of young players into the mix. You know, Rahul will have his own ideas on how to take this team forward and I see it still being a very good team,” said Ravi Shastri.
