ICC T20 World Cup 2024: [WATCH] Aqib Ilyas Takes A Stunner To Dismiss Glenn Maxwell For A First-Ball Duck In The AUS vs OMAN Match

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell‘s struggles with the bat persisted as he recorded a first-ball duck in the T20 World Cup 2024 match against Oman in Barbados. Oman captain Aqib Ilyas took a spectacular catch to quickly dismiss the Victorian.

The incident happened in the ninth over when Australian captain Mitchell Marsh was dismissed, bringing Maxwell to the crease. On his first delivery, Maxwell attempted a cover drive, sending the ball airborne. Ilyas leaped to his left, making a full-stretch dive to take a low catch, astonishing everyone.

Mehran Khan claimed his second wicket in consecutive deliveries, having just dismissed Marsh. Prior to Marsh’s dismissal, Bilal Khan had removed Travis Head, who scored 12 off 10 balls, giving Oman a strong start after choosing to field first.

Maxwell’s dismissal for zero runs further highlighted his ongoing struggles with the bat, reflecting his lackluster performance in the IPL 2024 season for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), where he maintained an average of only 5.77.

Despite the 35-year-old’s struggles with the bat, his off-spin is expected to be valuable throughout the tournament. With Caribbean pitches often favoring spinners, Maxwell has a good chance of taking wickets.

Australia manages to post 164 even with Glenn Maxwell’s first-ball duck

The 2021 T20 World Champions set a challenging target of 165 runs for Oman. After Australia fell to 50-3 in the ninth over, Marcus Stoinis and David Warner collaborated to stabilize the innings. Stoinis scored his half-century in 27 deliveries, while Warner reached the milestone in 46 balls.

The duo’s 100-run stand concluded in the 19th over when Warner was dismissed for 56 by Kaleemullah. While Oman recently suffered a narrow Super Over loss to Namibia, Australia is playing their opening match of the T20 World Cup 2024.
