Scotland and Ireland became the two teams from Europe to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 to be played in the West Indies and the United States of America.
After missing the 50 Over World Cup tournament in India this year, hosts Scotland beat Denmark by 33 runs while a washout game against Germany helped Ireland qualify for the prestigious tournament in the Europe Region qualifier on Thursday.
The regional finals team included Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Jersey, Italy, Denmark, and Austria. Each team played the other team once with the top two teams qualify for the prestigious T20 World Cup 2024.
Scotland’s journey in the tournament:
Scotland qualified in the tournament with 5 out of 5 wins. They began their journey with a dominating display against Germany winning by 72 runs via the DLS method on 20th July 2023 at Golderence Sports Ground, Edinburgh.
Scotland then registered a close-fought win over Jersey by 14 runs at The Grange Club, Edinburgh on 21st July. They produced another dominating victory against Italy by a massive 155 runs gap during match number 3 on 24th July.
Scotland hammered Austria by 166 runs on 25th July with George Munsey scoring 132 off 61 deliveries. The final league match saw Richard Berrington led side won with a comprehensive margin of 33 runs today.
It is a great achievement as Scotland missed the bus for the World Cup to be played in 2023. The 2024 T20 World Cup will see a total of 20 teams.
Ireland’s performance in the tournament:
Ireland finished second in the points table during the qualifying round. They began the tournament with a narrow 7 runs win over Italy played on 20th July. It was a very close fight as Ireland scored 158 for 8 while Italy made 151 for 9.
The second match saw Ireland produce a dominating performance with 9 wicket win over Denmark. Denmark posted 122 for 9 while Ireland chase down the target easily. The third match saw Ireland thrashing Austria by 128 runs on 23rd July.
They then produced another brilliant performance against Jersey winning the match by 9 wickets. The final league match against Germany was washed out due to rain helping Ireland qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024.
Both Scotland and Ireland missed the World Cup in 2023. They will play each other in the finals of the tournament on 28th July 2023. Ireland would be looking to continue their impressive performance which will be a confidence booster ahead of the T20I series against India in August.
