The T20 World Cup 2024 promises to be an exciting event with 20 teams taking part in the mega event to be played in the USA and West Indies starting from 1st to 29th June. He has been named as the brand ambassador for the mega event. The top two teams in each group will qualify for the Super Eight stage. The major attraction would be the India versus Pakistan encounter to be played in New York on 9th June 2024.
However, Bolt created major records during his time winning gold medals in 100 m, 200 m, and 4X 100 m races in record time during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He has the record of 100 m, 200 m, and 4 X 100 m with timings of 9.58 seconds, 19.19 seconds, and 36.84 seconds.
“I am thrilled to be an ambassador for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Coming from the Caribbean where cricket is a part of life, the sport has always held a special place in my heart,” Bolt said in an ICC media release.
Bolt will feature in promoting the T20 World Cup next week with a cameo appearance in the official anthem with key artists Sean Paul and Kes.
ICC Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Allardice said: “Usain Bolt is a global icon, we are thrilled to have him on board as an Ambassador for the T20 World Cup. His passion for cricket is well known, making him the perfect fit for this role.”
All You Need to Know About The Mega Event
The 2024 ICC T20 World Cup will be held in West Indies and USA. West Indies and USA qualified for the event as the co-host of the tournament.
Group A consists of India, Pakistan, Ireland, the USA, and Canada. India will open their tournament against Ireland on 5th June 2024, which will be followed by a mouth-watering clash against Pakistan on the 9th. After this, they will play with the USA on the 12th and the final league game with Canada on the 15th of June. All their matches would be played in New York.
England, Australia, Namibia, Oman, and Scotland will comprise of Group B. Namibia qualified for the mega event from Africa qualifier to be played from 22nd-30th November 2023. Scotland made it into the tournament from the Europe qualifying round from 20th- 28th July.
Group C will see the likes of West Indies, New Zealand, Afghanistan, PNG, and Uganda. Uganda qualified for the first time from the Africa qualifier played last year. PNG progressed through from East Asia Pacific region.
South Africa, Netherlands, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal would comprise Group D which would be a group of death. Netherlands qualified by finishing in the top 8 teams of T20 World Cup 2022 played in Australia.
