As the T20 World Cup looms ahead, India’s team selection is under scrutiny, with numerous players vying for a limited number of spots. Despite standout performances in the IPL by emerging talents like Riyan Parag, Mayank Yadav, and Abhishek Sharma, the national selection committee is hesitant to gamble on inexperienced players for such a high-stakes event.
According to a PTI report, the selectors are reluctant to thrust rookies into the pressure cooker environment of the T20 World Cup. However, there is hope for these budding stars beyond the World Cup. India is scheduled to participate in two white-ball series against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka post the T20 World Cup, providing an opportunity for players like Parag and Mayank to showcase their talents in bilateral contests.
The report stated: “The likes of Riyan Parag, Mayank Yadav, Abhishek Sharma, and Harshit Rana have all performed well but it is understood that the selection committee would like to follow the process of easing them in via bilateral cricket instead of putting them to test in a high-stakes World T20 game.”
Parag, who ranks second in IPL run-scoring charts behind Virat Kohli, has been a standout performer for Rajasthan Royals, amassing 318 runs in seven matches at an impressive average of over 63. Likewise, Abhishek Sharma has made waves with his explosive batting in the powerplay overs, boasting a strike rate exceeding 200. Despite limited game time, Mayank Yadav’s raw pace has sparked discussions regarding his potential inclusion.
The report further added: “Nitish Reddy, who is a seam bowling all-rounder and was part of India Emerging side that toured Sri Lanka last year, could also follow the same path.”
In addition to these names, Nitish Kumar Reddy, a seam-bowling all-rounder from Sunrisers Hyderabad, has also attracted the attention of the BCCI. It remains to be seen whether the board will arrange opportunities for players like Mayank Yadav, Harshit Rana, or Akash Madhwal to serve as net bowlers, offering them valuable exposure to international cricket environments.
Ultimately, while the T20 World Cup may not be the stage for untested talents, the upcoming bilateral series could serve as a stepping stone for promising players to prove their mettle on the international stage.
