“If we don’t work in the right direction, we will continue to fall further” – Inzamam-ul-Haq

Pakistan cricket has been struggling despite continuous changes in leadership and management. Former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has voiced strong concerns about the team’s future, warning the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that without a proper strategy, the team’s performance will continue to decline.

Frequent Changes Hurting Stability

Pakistan cricket has seen multiple changes in captaincy, coaching staff, selection committee, and administration in recent years. However, these adjustments have failed to yield positive results. Inzamam believes that the constant reshuffling is doing more harm than good.

Speaking to Cricket Pakistan, he emphasized that without a clear direction, Pakistan’s cricketing standards will deteriorate further. “In the past two years, the team’s performance has been declining. If we don’t work in the right direction, we will continue to fall further,” he said.

The former captain criticized PCB’s reactionary approach, arguing that simply replacing personnel does not address the root causes of failure. Instead of resorting to knee-jerk decisions, he urged the board to take a step back and assess the fundamental issues affecting the team’s performance. “Changing management, coaches, and players repeatedly will not solve the problem. We need to sit down and think about where the mistakes are being made,” he added.

Building Confidence Among Players

Inzamam also highlighted the negative impact of frequent changes on players’ morale. He stressed that continuous instability prevents cricketers from gaining confidence, which is essential for success at the international level. “Instead of making too many changes, we need to think carefully about where things are going wrong. If there are constant changes, players won’t gain the confidence they need, and the situation will remain the same,” he stated.

The former cricketer pointed out that Pakistan’s struggles have been evident since the conclusion of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Without a consistent approach, the team will continue to suffer setbacks. He believes the board should trust its players and management, allowing them time to rectify mistakes rather than replacing them at the first sign of trouble.

Backing Babar Azam Amid Criticism

One of the most scrutinized players in the team has been Babar Azam, Pakistan’s star batter. Inzamam defended Babar, stating that every player faces ups and downs in their career. He urged the PCB to support key players instead of questioning their capabilities after every poor performance. “Babar Azam is a top player. Everyone goes through a rough patch, but the national team hasn’t been playing good cricket for the past few months,” he said.

Ultimately, Inzamam believes Pakistan cricket needs long-term planning and stability. He called on the PCB to place trust in its players and coaching staff, working together to identify and fix mistakes rather than resorting to quick fixes that fail to deliver sustainable success.
