Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has voiced his concerns regarding player fitness as India prepares for a challenging five-match Test series against England starting June 20 at Leeds. Speaking on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast, Rohit emphasized the need to ensure that players remain injury-free through the rigorous Indian Premier League (IPL) schedule.
He pointed out the physically taxing nature of the tournament, despite it being a T20 format.
“It’s only four overs, but you play one day, travel the next, and play again. It’s tough, especially with the constant travel across the country,” Rohit explained.
The captain stressed how critical it is to manage the workload of key players, especially bowlers, to avoid injuries that could impact India’s chances in the Tests.

Bumrah and Shami Key to England Challenge
Rohit specifically highlighted the importance of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami remaining fit. Both pacers have been instrumental in India’s recent Test success and are considered vital to India’s campaign in England.
“I hope these two guys, along with the rest, finish the IPL without any injury concerns. A fully fit squad will give us a strong edge in the series,” Rohit said.
The skipper acknowledged the demanding calendar that modern cricketers face and admitted that keeping players physically and mentally fresh is one of the biggest challenges in today’s game. The Indian team’s performance in England heavily relies on its pace battery, making Bumrah and Shami’s fitness a top priority.
High Stakes and Historic Goals
India last won a Test series in England back in 2007 under Rahul Dravid’s captaincy. Their most recent tour ended in a 2-2 draw in 2022, with the final Test captained by Bumrah after the series was disrupted due to the pandemic. With the upcoming series forming part of the World Test Championship (WTC), the stakes are higher than ever.
Rohit, who is also India’s top scorer in WTC history with 2,716 runs in 40 Tests at an average of 41.15, is eager to lead a full-strength team to England. “The level of cricket being played today is intense. It’s going to be a good challenge,” he said, expressing hope that the team’s preparation and fitness would pave the way for a historic overseas triumph.
