Team India all-rounder Shardul Thakur shared a notable remark about head coach Gautam Gambhir, who recently drew attention during the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. Under Shubman Gill’s captaincy, India managed to level the five-match series 2-2.
In a conversation with RevSportz on Sunday, August 17, Shardul was asked about the criticism Gambhir has faced following India’s Test setbacks—first in the 2024 home series against New Zealand and then during the Australia tour.
Responding to this, Shardul said that criticism is a part of the game, but Gambhir has injected fresh energy and motivation into the side, ensuring that the team is progressing in the right direction. He added:
“Yes, we have always seen him as a player who is willing to fight for the team, and even during the huddles, he transferred that energy into us, the one that he brought into the field during his playing days. He is an achiever who has won trophies for the nation and the state.”
“And he brings all those experiences and motivations into the team. Criticism will come and go, but as a team, winning matters, and I believe we are heading in the right direction when it comes to that.”
“Lucky to represent your country” – Shardul reveals Gambhir’s message
During the same interaction, Shardul Thakur spoke about India’s performance under new Test captain Shubman Gill, highlighting how the young side managed to secure a 2-2 draw in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England.
He acknowledged that the team was short on experience after the retirements of senior stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, but credited head coach Gautam Gambhir for instilling confidence and self-belief in the squad. Shardul remarked:
“With Kohli and Rohit retiring and Shami missing, only Bumrah and Siraj had experience. Apart from KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, the batting was young. The team had no choice but to rise and fight, because in the end, you represent India.”
“In team huddles, Gauti Bhai reminded us we’re lucky to represent India. He said if you believe, no opponent is unbeatable. That belief and the hunger of youngsters to prove themselves lifted our morale and kept us going.”
