The Board of Control for Cricket in India is reportedly looking at two windows to host the inaugural season of the Women’s Indian Premier League. After the success of the Women’s T20 Challenge, there have been calls to begin the Women’s Indian Premier League from the players and the fans.
With inputs from the players, the BCCI is looking to go ahead with the Women’s Indian Premier League tournament. As per a report in The New Indian Express, the BCCI had discussions about the WIPL with the stakeholders, during the IPL 2022 playoffs. It is understood that the board is keen to host the tournament in March 2023. September is being considered as the other option.
Recently, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah mentioned starting the Women’s Indian Premier League. Since then the board has taken things seriously and towards the goal. Over the past week, the BCCI had discussions with Cricket Australia and England and Wales Cricket Board. They are likely to ask the ICC to create a separate window for its new league in the month of March.
This year, the BCCI conducted the Women’s T20 Challenge in Pune. The stadium witnessed a good crowd with 8,621 present for the finals. The Supernovas, led by Harmanpreet Kaur won the finals by four runs to lift their third Women’s T20 Challenge title.

T20 challenge was always going to be a stepping stone for Women’s IPL – Smriti Mandhana
Indian cricketer Smriti Mandhana had recently expressed that the Women’s T20 Challenge was the stepping stone for the Women’s Indian Premier League. Before the start of the 2022 Women’s T20 Challenge, she spoke about the tournament.
“The T20 Challenge was always going to be a stepping stone for the women’s IPL. And so, we’ve always tried to put up a good show so we can move towards the women’s IPL as soon as we can. This tournament has given us some good talent too – like Shafali Verma,” Smriti had said.
