Shubman Gill‘s dream of playing an international cricket match at his home ground of Mohali came true in the first ODI of the three-match series against Australia. The Indian opening batter played a pivotal role in his team’s thrilling victory by scoring a brilliant 74 off 63 balls.
Reflecting on his emotional journey, Gill shared that he had been dreaming of playing for India at Mohali since he was a 7-year-old spectator in the stands. He also praised his fellow batters, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan, for making the most of their opportunities in the national team.
Gill emphasized his adaptability and readiness to perform under varying circumstances, particularly with the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup on the horizon. He believes that his strength is to know when to attack and when to defend, and he is confident that he can adapt to the opponents and conditions at the World Cup.
Gill reflected on his dream of playing for India at Mohali: “I was 7 years old when we came to Mohali for the first time. Since I had seen so many matches here as a spectator, it was a dream for me to play an international match in Mohali. I’d played a couple of IPL matches but to play an international match with my family watching was special.”

When asked about his performance in the first ODI: “I’m really happy with my performance in the first ODI. I was able to contribute to the team’s victory, which is the most important thing. I think I played well in the conditions and made the most of the opportunities I got.”
On his partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad: “Ruturaj is a great player and we have a good understanding of each other’s game. We were able to build a good partnership and put the team in a good position. I’m really happy for him that he was able to get a fifty.”
On the upcoming ODI World Cup: “The ODI World Cup is a very important tournament and I’m excited to be a part of the Indian team. I’m working hard on my game and I’m confident that I can perform well at the World Cup. I know that I need to be adaptable and play according to the situation. I will try to adapt to the opponents and conditions and give myself the best possible chance to do well.”
