England skipper Joe Root scored his third double ton as captain and his second this year as he scored 218 against India in the first Test in Chennai. In the process, he took his tally to 644 runs in just three Tests so far. England are scheduled to play as many as 17 Test matches this year and thus Root has enough opportunities to end up being the highest run-getter in the calendar year.
Joe Root Overtakes Don Bradman
Meanwhile, the England skipper overtook former Australian legend Don Bradman to break an 84-year old record. Joe Root became only the second skipper after legendary Don Bradman to achieve the feat. Bradman was the first captain to notch up three successive 150-plus scores in Test cricket way back in 1937.

Earlier in his innings, he became the seventh player to make 150-plus runs in three consecutive Tests. om Latham, Kumar Sangakkara (4 consecutive Tests), Mudassar Nazar, Zaheer Abbas, Don Bradman, and Wally Hammond are the other names in the list.
Root started day 2 on 128 and went onto add 90 runs before he was finally dismissed by Shabaz Nadeem just after the tea break. In the process, he added 124 runs with Ben Stokes (82) and 86 runs with Ollie Pope (34).
Joe Root’s partnerships with first Stokes and then Pope on day two, left the Indian bowlers hapless. He picked the wicket of Ollie Pope just after the tea break to give some respite to the Indian team.
Nadeem then trapped Root to finally end his long vigil on the Chennai pitch and broke several records in the process. England meanwhile have scored over 500 runs after the wicket of Root piling up the agony on Team India in the process.
