The England cricket team faced a significant setback on Sunday when spinner Jack Leach was declared unfit for the remaining three Tests against India. Leach, who played a pivotal role in England’s victory in the series opener, was sidelined due to an injury that also caused him to miss the second match.

His absence was keenly felt as debutant Shoaib Bashir struggled to make an impact in the second Test, contributing to England’s defeat by 106 runs. With Leach out of contention, England’s spin bowling responsibilities now fall upon the shoulders of Rehan Ahmed, Tom Hartley, and Shoaib Bashir for the remainder of the series against India.

Despite Leach’s absence, England opted not to seek a replacement, signalling their confidence in the available spinners to step up for the rest of the tour. England captain Joe Root, who has been a key player on spin-friendly Indian pitches, had also suffered an injury during the Vizag Test, but the statement from the England camp did not provide any updates on his status.

In an official statement, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed Leach’s unavailability for the rest of the tour due to a left knee injury sustained during the first Test in Hyderabad. Leach will return home from Abu Dhabi within the next 24 hours, where the team had been based ahead of the third Test in Rajkot, slated to commence on Thursday.

His rehabilitation will be closely monitored by medical teams from both England and Somerset. Despite being primarily known for his bowling prowess, the 32-year-old spinner has also proven to be a valuable contributor with the bat lower down the order, adding to the significance of his absence for the England team.

In summary, Leach’s injury deals a blow to England’s spin bowling department, requiring other players to step up in his absence for the remainder of the Test series against India.
