IND vs ENG: Jasprit Bumrah Faces ICC Reprimand For Code Of Conduct Breach

During the inaugural match of the ICC World Test Championship series against England in Hyderabad, India’s pace sensation, Jasprit Bumrah, found himself on the wrong side of the ICC Code of Conduct. The disciplinary breach occurred in the 81st over of England’s second innings, where Bumrah, intentionally or not, obstructed Ollie Pope’s path during a run, leading to inappropriate physical contact.

This transgression resulted in Bumrah being officially reprimanded for violating Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, specifically addressing inappropriate physical contact with players, support personnel, umpires, match referees, or any other individual present during an international match. It marked Bumrah’s first offence within 24 months, earning him one demerit point added to his disciplinary records.

Acknowledging his wrongdoing, Bumrah admitted to the offence and willingly accepted the sanctions proposed by Richie Richardson, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. This cooperative approach negated the necessity for a formal hearing. The on-field umpires—Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney—along with third umpire Marais Erasmus and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit, were instrumental in levelling the charge.

According to the ICC’s penalty framework for Level 1 breaches, the minimum repercussion is an official reprimand, while the maximum may include a deduction of 50% of the player’s match fee and the addition of one or two demerit points.

Shifting the focus to the cricketing action, the contest in Hyderabad showcased England’s impressive display of Bazball, ultimately securing a 28-run victory and a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Despite Jasprit Bumrah’s notable contribution, taking six wickets in the opening Test, India faced a setback.

Looking ahead, the anticipation builds for the second Test scheduled in Vizag starting from February 2nd, where both teams aim to make their mark in this closely watched series.
