IND vs ENG: R Ashwin Returns To Field Without ‘Penalty Time’

Senior Indian off-spinner R Ashwin returned to action during the post-tea session on the fourth day of the third Test against England after briefly leaving to attend to his ailing mother in Chennai. Despite departing shortly after achieving the milestone of 500 Test wickets on the match’s second day, Ashwin did not face any penalty time for his absence on the third day, as per the ICC’s Playing Conditions.

According to ICC’s clause 24.3.2, a player’s absence does not incur penalty time if deemed acceptable by the umpires, provided it’s for reasons other than illness or injury. Ashwin, arriving in Rajkot on Sunday afternoon, was observed participating in drills during the tea break.

The BCCI had earlier confirmed Ashwin’s return to national duty during the first session of the fourth day. Previously, the BCCI officially announced Ashwin’s return to national responsibilities during the initial session of the fourth day.

BCCI said: “The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is pleased to announce the return of Ravichandran Ashwin to the squad after a brief absence due to a family emergency. Ashwin had to temporarily withdraw from the squad after Day 2 of the 3rd Test in Rajkot to attend to a family emergency.”

“Both R Ashwin and the team management are pleased to confirm that he will be back in action on Day 4 and will continue to contribute towards the team’s cause in the ongoing Test match.”

The BCCI also praised all stakeholders for demonstrating empathy during a pivotal period for the renowned cricketer.

The team management, players, media, and supporters have displayed significant understanding and compassion, recognizing the primacy of family. Both the team and its fans have remained steadfast in their support of Ashwin throughout this difficult time, and the management is thrilled to have him back on the field.
