India might face tough challenges ahead of the first two Tests against England, with Virat Kohli already unavailable. The highly anticipated series opener at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad is scheduled for January 25, and both teams are actively preparing. However, a setback occurred during India’s practice session as middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer faced difficulty after being hit on his right forearm by a ball.

Iyer’s struggle raised concerns for the team management, especially given the absence of star batsman Virat Kohli. The injury scare, though initially worrisome, turned out to be brief as Iyer, after receiving treatment from physios including ice-packs, returned to the nets and resumed his practice for the crucial Test against England. His presence is crucial in filling the gap left by Kohli in the middle order.

With KL Rahul designated as a specialist batter and the no. 4 spot uncertain due to Kohli’s absence, there might be a reshuffling of the batting order. Head coach Rahul Dravid hinted at the possibility of KS Bharat, coming off a stellar performance against England Lions, taking on a significant role in the lineup.

On the English side, there are uncertainties regarding skipper Ben Stokes’ match-readiness, according to head coach Brendon McCullum. While Stokes has proven his fitness, the management is taking its time to confirm his availability for the opening game. A last-minute decision regarding Stokes’ participation is expected, adding an element of suspense to the contest in Uppal. The dynamics of both teams are poised for an intriguing start to the Test series.
