The long-anticipated first Test between India and England commenced at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on January 25. After winning the toss, England’s captain Ben Stokes opted to bat first, initiating a solid start with openers Zak Crawley (20 off 40) and Ben Duckett (35 off 39), who forged a 55-run partnership for the first wicket in 71 balls.

Ravichandran Ashwin broke this partnership by trapping Duckett leg before the stumps, while Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Ollie Pope (1 off 11) caught at slip, leaving England at 58/2 after 14.4 overs. England’s renowned batsman, Joe Root, joined the fray and faced an early challenge as he was struck on the pad attempting a paddle sweep off Jadeja.

Despite an appeal, the on-field umpire remained unconvinced, prompting a review initiated by captain Rohit Sharma. The Ultra Edge analysis, albeit delayed, displayed a spike even with a visible gap between the bat and the ball.

Despite the contentious moment, the third umpire, Marais Erasmus, found no grounds to overturn the decision, and Root continued his innings. However, in the second session, Root was eventually dismissed for 29 (60) as he got caught at short fine leg while attempting a sweep. During this innings, Root not only added runs to his tally but also secured his position as the leading run-scorer in India vs.

England Tests, surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar with 2555 runs from 46 innings at an impressive average of 62.31. As the game unfolded, England’s innings concluded at 246, with skipper Ben Stokes top-scoring at 70 (88). India’s bowling stalwarts, Ravichandran Ashwin (3/68) and Ravindra Jadeja (3/88), emerged as the standout performers.
