India’s young talent, Sarfaraz Khan, announced his arrival in international cricket with a stellar performance on his debut during the third Test against England at Rajkot’s Niranjan Shah Stadium. Stepping in at a crucial moment with India at 237/4 following Rohit Sharma’s dismissal after a commendable 131, the 26-year-old Mumbai batsman faced a challenging start against England’s pace ace, Mark Wood.
Initially cautious, Sarfaraz showcased his batting prowess when the spinners took over, swiftly reaching his half-century off just 48 deliveries. His achievement was met with jubilation, evident from the proud smiles and blown kisses from his father Naushad Khan and wife Romana Zahoor.
Notably, Sarfaraz’s fifty on debut ranks as the joint second-fastest by an Indian in Tests, alongside Yuvraj of Patiala, who accomplished the feat in 1934, and matches the speed of Hardik Pandya’s debut fifty in 2017.

However, Sarfaraz’s innings was cut short at 62 runs, falling victim to a run-out by Mark Wood in a mix-up with Ravindra Jadeja, who was eyeing his century. The unfortunate dismissal left both Sarfaraz and captain Rohit Sharma visibly frustrated, as evidenced by Rohit’s display of anger in the dressing room.
Earlier in the day, India faced a rocky start, losing three wickets early on, including Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, before Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja steadied the ship with a formidable 204-run partnership.
Despite Sarfaraz’s brief but impactful debut innings, his contribution played a significant role in India’s recovery after a shaky start. His ability to adapt to the changing conditions and assert himself against the English bowling attack showcased his potential as a valuable asset to the Indian team.
As Sarfaraz embarks on his international journey, his debut performance serves as a promising indication of his future contributions to Indian cricket.
