IND vs ENG: [WATCH] Shubman Gill’s Frustration Erupts As Century Bid Foiled By Mix-up with Kuldeep Yadav

Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri shared their thoughts following the unfortunate run-out of Shubman Gill on Day 4 of the 3rd Test between India and England. Gill, poised to achieve his fourth Test century, fell short by just nine runs after a miscommunication with Kuldeep Yadav resulted in a run-out. As Kuldeep struck the ball to mid-on, Gill, halfway down the pitch, failed to respond to his partner’s call, leading to Stokes swiftly retrieving the ball and initiating the run-out. Gill’s frustration was palpable through his body language as he expressed his disappointment by slamming his bat on the ground on his way back.

This marked the second instance where Gill narrowly missed a century, reminiscent of his dismissal for 91 in the Gabba Test of 2021. Shastri and Gavaskar, while commentating, questioned Gill’s decision to attempt the risky run, emphasizing that there was no viable opportunity for it.

Sunil Gavaskar said: “He is gutted. Shubman Gill will be kicking himself, Well, there was no run there. So it doesn’t add up [Gill slamming his bat]. Missing out on another hundred.”

Despite Gill’s departure, India maintained their dominance in the match, extending their lead to over 400 runs. With Yashasvi Jaiswal and debutant Sarfaraz Khan forming a strong partnership, India headed into lunch in a commanding position at 314/4, with a lead of 440 runs and Jaiswal unbeaten on 149.

Gill’s innings, characterized by nine boundaries and two sixes, showcased his talent but also highlighted the missed chance to achieve a substantial score. The confusion leading to the run-out stemmed from Kuldeep’s advance down the wicket and Gill’s misjudgment as he focused solely on the ball behind him, culminating in a regrettable outcome.

Anil Kumble during interval said: “There were two things. One of course, Kuldeep playing that shot and thinking that he had placed it nicely. Shubman Gill was looking behind but if he was looking straight at his partner, the result could have been different. I’m sure Kuldeep would have sacrificed but since he was looking behind, there was no way he could have made it to the batter’s end.”
