Axat Patel is going through a memorable phase in Test cricket at the moment. In just four Tests, he has taken five fifers with the most recent one coming against the Kiwis in Kanpur. Axar’s emergence in Test cricket has been one of India’s biggest positives of Indian cricket this year.
Meanwhile, there is a lot of conundrum regarding his name. He writes his name as Axar presently while it used to be “Akshar” a few years ago. He was referred to as Axar on some occasions and as Akshar on others. For the last few years, he has been using the name Axar and is referred to as Axar in the BCCI’s releases. But the cricketer continues to use the name “Akshar” on his social media accounts.
Speaking to the Hindu, Axar Patel’s parents revealed the story behind Akshar becoming Axar.
“He was born in Anand (a town famous for milk products) and the nurse issued the hospital certificate for birth registration spelling it as ‘Axar’. That’s how it stuck to him,” the cricketer’s mother told. His Instagram account has the name Akshar at the moment.

Axar Patel became a prominent name in international cricket after his season with Kings XI Punjab back in 2014. He took 17 wickets that season as Punjab made it to their first and only IPL final. The left-arm spinner also made it to India’s 2015 World Cup squad.
He spoke about how Ravichandran Ashwin helped him plan Tom Latham’s dismissal in the first innings. Latham fell just five short of a hundred as he was stumped by KS Bharat off Axar’s bowling.
R Ashwin Asked Me To Bowl Away From The Batter: Axar Patel

“Jinx (captain Ajinkya Rahane) told me that it would be my last over after which (Ravindra) Jadeja would come on from my end. I was bowling to him (Latham) on stumps but he was not sweeping or stepping out. Our senior spinner, whose name is Ravichandran Ashwin (smiles), was standing at mid-on and constantly telling me to bowl the ball away from the batter.”
“Since I had only over left, I decided to try it and told the captain to send point back. Then, I bowled it away from the batter,” Axar added.
