IND vs NZ 2021: “Yuzvendra Chahal Deserves A Chance” – Robin Uthappa

Veteran India cricketer Robin Uthappa feels Yuzvendra Chahal deserves a chance in India’s playing XI for the T20I series against New Zealand. However, he added that it will be unfair on Axar Patel, as the all-rounder may have to make way for Chahal.

The T20I series between India and New Zealand kickoff on Wednesday at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Notably, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal missed out on a place in the XI. India decided to go in with Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel as the two spinners. Ashwin took two wickets, while Axar conceded runs at a 7.8 economy rate with no wickets to his name.

Speaking on Espncricinfo, Uthappa asserted that Chahal deserves a chance given his form. The leg-spinner made a brilliant comeback in the UAE leg of IPL 2021, as he took 14 wickets in eight matches.

“Yes, he deserves a chance with the form that he is in. But having said that, it would be unfair on someone like Axar Patel to miss out on a game. So I guess, Axar will play one more game before Yuzi gets an opportunity. Yes but he will stick around in the side and we will see him play a lot more cricket in the future.”

Former New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori too has backed leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. Daniel feels Chahal complements India’s T20I game. He added that the skipper Rohit Sharma could use the leg-spinner as an attacking option in the T20 matches. Daniel said,

“Yes, he compliments everything India try to do in a T20I game and Rohit should use him as an attacking weapon. I think it will be a really good option for India.”

The second T20I between India and New Zealand will take place on Friday, November 19 at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi.
