India’s young batting sensation, Sai Sudharsan, did not take the field on Day 3 of the ongoing second Test against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, after sustaining an impact injury to his hand. The injury occurred on the previous day when Sudharsan made a diving effort to complete a sharp catch offered by West Indies opener John Campbell off Ravindra Jadeja’s bowling.
Though he managed to complete the catch cleanly, the powerful impact caused immediate discomfort, forcing him to leave the field for treatment. His absence on the third day raised concerns among fans, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) later issued an update, clarifying that the injury was not serious and his exclusion from the field was primarily a precautionary measure.
BCCI’s Medical Update and Replacement in the Field
In an official statement, the BCCI assured that Sai Sudharsan’s condition is being closely monitored by the medical team. The board emphasized that the decision to rest him was made to avoid aggravating the injury, considering the long international calendar ahead. With Sudharsan unavailable for fielding duties, Devdutt Padikkal was brought in as a substitute fielder at forward short leg, ensuring India maintained a strong on-field presence. Team sources confirmed that Sudharsan had sustained minor bruising and swelling in his right hand, but scans revealed no major damage.
The team management is hopeful he will recover in time for the next innings or upcoming matches. This update provided some relief to fans who were anxious about the young player’s fitness, especially after his impressive performance with the bat in the first innings.
A Promising Knock in India’s Dominant First Innings
Before his injury, Sai Sudharsan had been one of the standout performers for India in the first innings. The 22-year-old left-hander played a mature and composed knock of 87 runs off 165 balls, showcasing solid technique and temperament against the Caribbean bowling attack. His partnership of 193 runs with Yashasvi Jaiswal laid a strong foundation for India’s commanding total of 518 for 5 declared.
Sudharsan’s innings was praised for its mix of patience and flair, reflecting his growing confidence at the international level. His absence in the fielding session was certainly felt, but the team’s focus remains on ensuring his complete recovery. With the BCCI confirming that the injury is not serious, Sudharsan is expected to be available soon, continuing his promising rise in Indian cricket.
