Indian Women beat England women in one-off Test match played at Navi Mumbai

The Indian Women’s Cricket Team registered the biggest-ever win in Women’s Test cricket with a resounding win over England on 3rd morning of a one-off encounter played at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai on 16th December 2023.

Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur declared the overnight score of 186 for 6 setting a daunting target of 479 runs to England. Renuka Singh and Sneha Rana began their duties for the Indian team against Tammy Beaumont and Sophia Dunkley. England’s openers looked in decent touch with lovely strokes.

Renuka Singh produced a stunning delivery to dismiss Beaumont getting the early breakthrough for the Indian team. Pooja Vastkar was at her best getting wickets of Sophia Dunkley with a sharp catch by Harleen Deol and then shattering the stumps of Nat Sciver Brunt to leave the England team on the backfoot.

Heather Knight and Dani Wyatt showed some resistance against disciplined Indian bowling. Pooja Vastkar dismissed Knight with a lovely delivery caught by Yastika Bhatia to leave the England team in deep trouble. Knight and Wyatt added 31 runs for the 4th wicket.

Deepti Sharma got rid of Wyatt with a good low catch by Sneha Rana to leave the England team in tatters. The off-spinner then dismissed Amy Jones as Shafali Varma took a simple catch. Rajeshwari Gayakwad troubled Sophie Ecclestone before shattering her stumps to bring the Indian team to cusp of the history.

Deepti Sharma then dismissed Kate Cross and Lauren Flier quickly. Charlie Dean looked impressive with her strokes with the attacking field set by Kaur. Rajeshwari Gakywad got rid of Lauren Bell with a simple catch by Rodrigues to bowl out England for 131 in 27.3 overs.

It was a dominating display by the Indian women’s team with all-round performances right from the word go. Indian team posted 428 runs in the first innings thanks to half-centuries by Shubha Satheesh, Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, and Yastika Bhatia which helped the Indian team to post a big score.

Deepti Sharma created havoc with 5 for 7 in 5.3 overs to trigger a collapse bowling out England women for 136. The Indian team decided not to enforce the follow-on. Smriti Mandhana and Varma provided a solid start putting on 61 runs for the opening wicket before they lost a flurry of wickets. Harmanpreet Kaur and Vastrkar steadied the ship before the Indian team ended the day 2 on 186 for 6.

For her all-round performances, Deepti Sharma was named the player of the match award. It was an impressive performance by the Indian women’s team.
