Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar scored outstanding centuries to lead one of Indian cricket’s most memorable comebacks, helping the team avoid defeat and secure an unexpected draw against England in the fourth Test on Sunday. After England posted a massive 669 in reply to India’s 358, the visitors faced a huge challenge.
Their hopes of saving the match at Old Trafford depended on the overnight pair, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill. India began the final day at 174/2, still 137 runs behind England’s total, with the series evenly poised at 2-1 in favour of the hosts. Stokes removed Rahul for 90 and Archer dismissed Gill on 103, putting England in control before lunch.
But Sundar (101*) and Jadeja (107*) fought back with an unbeaten 203-run stand, turning the tide and earning India a memorable draw. Sometimes, a draw feels like a win, and after battling through 143 overs to reach 425/4, India will surely treasure this gritty effort.

Gill’s Faith In Sundar Pays Off Amid Selection Debate
Since his selection for the second Test in Birmingham, Washington Sundar’s inclusion has sparked debate, with many favouring Kuldeep Yadav on batting-friendly pitches. However, skipper Shubman Gill backed Sundar for his batting skills—and was rewarded with a flawless innings.
Usually batting at No. 8 despite his top-order aspirations, Sundar was promoted to No. 5 ahead of Jadeja and delivered a knock nearly as good as KL Rahul’s. Despite bowling through pain, Stokes charged in with intensity, extracting life from the pitch and even rattling Gill with a blow to the hand and helmet. He brought in Archer, known for troubling left-handers.
But 25-year-old Sundar stayed calm under pressure, defending solidly and rotating strike smartly to keep the scoreboard moving and England unsettled. Sundar found strong support in Jadeja, who overcame a first-ball drop to punish England with a mix of grit and flair.
The seasoned all-rounder brought up his fifth Test ton, guiding Sundar along, who soon celebrated his maiden hundred—capping off a memorable day for India in Manchester.
