Former India left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan urged the Men in Blue management to ensure that every player clearly understands the team’s objectives amid ongoing experimentations leading up to the Champions Trophy 2025. He cautioned that a lack of clarity within the dressing room could lead to complications.
Team India has been making several changes during the ongoing ODI series against England. Yashasvi Jaiswal was handed his debut in the first match in Nagpur. Although Virat Kohli missed the game due to injury, Shreyas Iyer revealed that Jaiswal would have been included in the playing XI even if the former India captain was fit.
On Sunday, February 9, India decided to rest left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav after just one match in the series, giving a debut to leg-spinner Varun Chakravarthy. Meanwhile, Harshit Rana has been favored over Arshdeep Singh in both ODIs. Discussing India’s frequent changes on Cricbuzz, Zaheer shared his views:
“It’s absolutely fine to try out. They are fully entitled to do what they really feel as tactics. But, in the process, you can’t ignore certain things. There are terms and conditions which apply with addressing certain plans.”
”As long as you are ticking those boxes, you will stay on track. You will not go off the track. You will not see the downside of things. That is very important for them to know.”
The 46-year-old advised the Indian management to maintain clear communication within the team, warning that any gaps could be harmful in the long run. He further added:
“From the outside, we can only do guesswork and try and put logic to the thinking. But when it comes to being part of the dressing room, if you are the stakeholder, you should be able to tick all those boxes to make sure everyone knows what we are trying to achieve.”
”You will create some communication gap at some stage. If you are missing a piece, it will catch up at some stage.”
India lead 2-0 in three-match series Against England
Despite making changes to their squad, India secured a commanding 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. On Sunday, they defeated England by four wickets in Cuttack in the second ODI. England set a target of 304 while batting first, with Ravindra Jadeja impressing with figures of 3-35.
However, India comfortably chased it down in 44.3 overs, thanks to skipper Rohit Sharma’s brilliant 119 off 90 balls.
